Traditional accountancy training concentrates in compliance, financial and accounting techniques, and financial management and planning. It does not provide insights in strategic planning, organisational skills, marketing techniques, contemporary management theories, and business strategy formulation.
In early 90s, one of my consultancy projects was to analyse the financial and management inadequacy of a small and failing enterprise who had real potential to become a major player in its field. The objectives of this project was to address the problems encountered by the management of this small enterprise; highlight the strengths and weaknesses of its business practices; and provide a business strategic framework and recommendations for rectification and growth.
This project had analysed the financial performance of the enterprise, reviewed its historical background, examined its internal and external business environment, and focused on the organisational and financial restructuring in order to overcome the short term difficulties and pave the path for the long term strategic development and growth.
This report is a heavy duty document full of information and concepts in strategic planning, organisational skills, marketing techniques, contemporary management theories, and business strategy formulation. It also explored the contemporary theories enshrined in each element of the business framework; demonstrated the appropriateness and effectiveness of the strategy formulation framework to the business of the enterprise in question; and provided responses and recommendations to the management of the enterprise in improving their business and financial management. Due to the confidentiality clause, part of this report has been modified to hide the identities of those concerned, or cut short which you may notice a lack of smooth continuity at several odd places.
Pay particular attention from chapters 4 onward. If you are a busy accountant, this report may be just what you need to know about management, marketing and organisational skills without going through mountains of books.
